Welcome address by Sano Akira, President of Kagoshima University
Distinguished Guests and Participants, thank you for participating in Kagoshima University’s Inter-University exchange project’s Fiscal Year 2021 Symposium.
This project started in 2018 and is now in its fourth year.
At the start of the project, we held a kick-off symposium, but unfortunately, since then the Corona Pandemic has limited our activities over the past two years.
However, we haven’t stood still during the pandemic. We have been able to conduct active educational exchanges among students from partner universities using an online international collaborative learning method called COIL, in which students are connected in cyberspace using ICT and collaborate to conduct classes and symposiums.
This year, we are pleased to host a symposium that aims to bring together the wisdom of our partner universities in the U.S., Kagoshima, and Asia to address the global issue of “sustainable development”.
Kagoshima University is rooted in the local community and promotes the internationalization of the university through educational programs that make the most of our region’s attractions. I would like to express my gratitude to the local businesses, local governments, and citizens who are here today for their continued support and ask for your help in further strengthening the partnership between the region and the university.
We are also pleased to welcome two guests as speakers for today’s symposium. The first speaker, Dr. John Michael Gonzales from the University of Georgia’s Department of Animal & Dairy Science, will speak on sustainable and ethical beef production. Following him is Professor Shigenori Fujikawa from Kyushu University’s Carbon Neutral Research Center who will introduce Japan’s cutting-edge research on carbon dioxide absorption technologies. I would like to extend our sincere thanks to both guest speakers.
Following the guest lectures, Dr. Hisako Nomura and Dr. Yasuaki Hiromasa, both from the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, will join us as facilitators for a discussion between the speakers and the audience. I would also like to thank them for their contribution to our symposium.
I also would like to offer words of encouragement to the faculty members of our partner universities and our university who are working on the project, as well as to the administrative staff who support them.
The current severe situation in which free travel to and from overseas is restricted gives us an opportunity to review the state of international education and to develop new educational methods.
I would like to conclude my remarks by expressing my hope that today’s symposium will be an opportunity for faculty and staff to unite and make full use of various knowledge, technology, and networks to help students acquire a global perspective and mindset.

大学の世界展開力強化事業2021年度シンポジウム
SDGsのポリティクス：技術革新、経済、倫理
会場のみなさま、大学の世界展開力強化事業・2021年度シンポジウムにご参加いただき、ありがとうございます。
本事業は2018年にスタートし、今年で4年目になります。
事業開始の際には、キックオフシンポジウムを行いましたが、残念なことに、ここ２年間、コロナパンデミックにより、活動は制限されました。
しかしながら、この間、ICTを利用してサイバー空間でつながり、協働して授業やシンポジウムを行うCOILというオンライン国際協働学習の手法を用いて、連携大学の学生間に活発な教育交流を行ってきました。
今年は、米国、鹿児島、アジアの連携大学の知恵を結集し、「持続可能な開発」というグローバル課題に取り組むことを目的とするシンポジウムを開催する運びとなりました。
鹿児島大学は地域に根ざし、地域の魅力を最大限にいかした教育プログラムによって大学の国際化を推進しております。本日、ご出席いただいている地元企業や自治体、市民のみなさまの日頃よりのご支援に感謝を申し上げるとともに、地域と大学とのさらなる連携強化についてお力添えをお願い致します。
また、本日のシンポジウムには、二人のゲストを講演者にお迎えしています。一人目は、米国ジョージア大学農業環境科学部のジョン・マイケル・ゴンザレス博士に、持続可能で倫理的な牛肉生産についてご講演いただきます。続きまして、九州大学カーボンニュートラル国際研究所の藤川茂紀教授に、二酸化炭素の吸収技術に関する日本の最先端研究を紹介していただきます。基調講演をお務めいただくお二人に、心よりお礼を申し上げます。
ゲスト講演に続き、講演者と会場が議論を行うディスカッションでは、ファシリテーターとして九州大学農学研究院の野村久子博士・廣政恭明博士にご参加頂きます。ここに厚くお礼申し上げます。
そのほか、プロジェクトに取り組む連携大学及び本学の教員、そしてそれを支える事務の方々にも、励ましの言葉を述べさせていただきます。現在、海外との自由な往来が規制される厳しい状況が続いておりますが、これは、国際教育のあり方を見直し、新たな教育方法を開発する好機でもあります。本日のシンポジウムが、教職員が一致団結し、様々な知識や技術、ネットワークを駆使して、学生がグローバルな視野とマインドを身につけることのできる機会となりますことを祈念しまして私からのご挨拶とさせていただきます。
